Air Breathers: Why They Should be Your Cold Air Intake's Next Mod
That Chevy Camaro you love -- its performance upgrades: 90% done. You've put in a turbocharger (or better, a supercharger), axed the factory air cleaner assembly, and you're swapping out the original air intake for a cold air intake, looking to get that power bump you've been dreaming of. What better finishing touch than an air breather or two?
They're not just recommended for induction systems (especially aftermarket), they're a must. That's because, where a factory air filter's been taken out, something has to make up for engine filtration in order for your sports car to run right. Enter air breathers: mini paper or foam air filters, with metal mesh in a rubber or plastic housing, that attach to intake hose inlets or outlets; they do the same job of keeping damaging airborne contaminants away from engine parts.
Just be sure to install them correctly and regularly inspect them to ensure your cold intake lasts longer. That means keep an eye out for dirt accumulating on them, for discoloration, and for vacuum leaks and a Check Engine light showing up on the dash (indicating you might've put them in wrong, or that the engine air/fuel ratio's too lean, or both). This is critical, too; after all, a lean-running engine also runs damagingly hot, and you don't want to be on the hook for repairs.
