What Do Fog Lights Do for GM Vehicles?
The shine low, wide, and brightly with short beams. This makes them ideal for lighting the way in bad weather where visibility's limited. In fact, they do this much better than your average headlights and taillights do.
What Types of Fog Lights are There?
There are three: halogen, Xenon (also called high-intensity discharge/HID), and LED. Halogen fog lights are the commonest; you can find them in smaller cars, like Chevy Cruze. Xenon fog lights, you usually find in the narrower housings of sports cars, such as the Saturn Sky. LED fog lights, you can find in many newer vehicles these days (the Buick LaCrosse may come to mind).
When Do You Replace Fog Lights?
Halogen fog light bulbs, you should change every couple of years or so. Change HID fog light bulbs, on the other hand, as they weaken; that's about every three years. You ought to change LED fog light bulbs if their electronics fail or the bulbs themselves burn out. Of course, this also depends on the lifespan specified in your owner's manual or other manufacturer's documentation. Refer to that for specifics.
What Kind of Fog Lights Does Your Vehicle Need?
That's body style- and model-dependent. Cars and SUVs use different ones from trucks and vans, generally, and the fog lights in, say, the Cadillac Escalade may be another kind than those in, say, the GMC Sierra 1500. Again, consult your vehicle's manual for the right info. Either way, though, you should choose the genuine article.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Fog Lights?
GM will have designed them to fit the brand and model you drive perfectly. Aftermarket fog lights may not fit right, either in your lighting's housing, in its sockets generally, or both -- even if their brands claim they will.
