Straight-line racing's one thing. That's for sports cars. Drag racing's another. For that, you need a serious muscle car -- one that packs a bigger punch power-wise, but with every little gain in fuel economy that you can get.

A lot of engine parts factor in there, but most important among them: the transmission. And muscle cars need not good ones, but great ones. That's where the GM 2004R comes in.

The 2004R Transmission from GM -- The Stuff Pony Car Legends are Made of

A four-speed auto with overdrive from the 1980s, in the proud tradition of the Turbo Hydramatic line, it's wildly popular in muscle cars -- even if hard to get your hands on these days, even from scrapyards. (If you drive a model from the era -- the Chevy Monte Carlo of '84 to '88 comes to mind -- you might already know what we're talking about.)

That's because, as upgrades from Powerglide two-speeds or TH350 three-speeds go, they're one of the easiest to make -- no major mods (like having to shorten a driveshaft) needed. And as reasons to trade up on your old TH350 go, that's a great one -- but you've got to find a 2004R first. You're in luck. Maybe the best thing about it, though? Its Chevrolet and BOP bell housing bolt pattern. That makes it so you can put it in all kinds of GM models like yours, especially vintage cars. It even fits where space is at a premium -- a little better than its sibling transmission, the 700R4, made for larger cars and trucks.
