What Does a Bed Liner Do for a Chevy or GMC Pickup?

Basically, it does what a cargo liner and cargo tray does for the bare floor plastics and upholstery in a car or SUV. It helps keep muck and debris from collecting in and on the truck box, which damage it and eventually rust out its metals. They also shield the bed from the bumps and scrapes caused by cargo prone to shifting during transport -- power tools, big equipment, building materials, and the like.

What Types of Bed Liners are There?

Drop-in and spray-on are the commonest. Drop-in bed liners do as they seem -- they drop in place in the truck bed, and they're removable. Most are made of plastic. Spray-on bed liners are typically an aliphatic or polyurethane base applied with a spray gun, but you can sometimes paint them on with a brush instead. (Roll-on bed liners are similar to the latter -- they apply to the surfaces of truck boxes with a paint roller.) Both protect a truck in the long term, as they're supposed to be permanent solutions.

There are other kinds of bed liners, too, most notably those that come in several parts that you lock together. Carpet bed liners, though, attach using hook and loop fastener, most of the time, and they can cover either the bottom of truck boxes only or their entirety. Disposable and portable truck bed liners, for another example, are a temporary type. The former is for one-time use, while the latter can last for several hauls. There are also such things as rubber bed mats, but they're different from bed liners insofar as they don't replace them per se; however, they do serve as additional protective layers, and durable ones at that.
