What are Some Common GMC Terrain Problems?

Terrain is an SUV that's been around a while. As such, it holds its value fairly well, even for a luxury brand like GMC, known for the occasional decent price tag. It can be relatively inexpensive to maintain, though. In fact, yours can last up to 20 years, as many as 300,000 miles, if you service it regularly. You'll just want to stay on top of a few problems it can have.

1. Failed HVAC

If the heater and air conditioner in your Terrain are malfunctioning -- if, for example, the heater is blowing cold air, or the system smells funny -- the problem could be anything from a clogged HVAC drain hose (in which case, you'll want to look for a water leak) to something else. This was a known issue for models from 2014, for instance, those with around 61,000 miles on their odometers these days.

Check technical service bulletins from GMC (TSB #10178385, for example, or #10126107, #10135395, or #10112343) for a better explanation of what might be going on, but most likely, a heating and AC inspection will tell you what parts you'll need to replace.

2. Faulty Engines

If the Check Engine light is on in your Terrain, it's a 2013, for instance, and it's got 50,000 to 100,000 miles or more, you might've already run into engine problems -- the engine using too much oil, for instance, or stalling, loss of engine power, even engine failure. Run an inspection to figure out exactly what the problem is, but most likely, you'll need an engine replacement.

3. Bad Water Pumps

Terrain models from, say, 2012, can start to whine, a noise usually heard from the cooling system. The most likely culprit: a faulty water pump. That's even more likely is you've just had the pump, its chain, or the cylinder head worked on. What's happening is the water pump chain tensioner's failed, the likely result of your Terrain getting serviced without a water pump sprocket holding tool.

Check technical service bulletins from GMC (TSB #10157015 and #10126983) for more info on how to reset the tensioner; that should get rid of the noise.
